The barbaric Europe (Paperback)

Customer Review

In this book the author seeks to change our perceptions of the postwar during the 1945-1950 years. It exposes the poorly known events and gives a history of a continent that sank into anarchy ', as he says.

In 1945, across Europe, everything was in ruins not only the cities of earth, but the political institutions, economic tools, transportation, et cetera. The result gives the hungry diseases become rare as tuberculosis and malaria. Rape, looting, violence is the daily. Keith Lowe, great English historian, delivers his investigation on three main themes: revenge, ethnic cleansing and civil war and explores each country by country. It is this exploration in nearly all the countries of Europe, which is remarkable in this book. He illustrates his themes with multiple stories and local sources. I find this book (well translated English by Johann Fréderik Hel Guedj) masterful telling if these tragic events.

In the final a bit of light: "If the Second World War destroyed the old continent, its aftermath were protean chaos from which the new Europe was formed," he said.

For me this is an important book at this time when we have national trends all around Europe. Well recommended.
