It's quite complicated to explain: I think that comics is good if it is assumed that it will attempt to give a sample summary of an ultra character and his universe, has an American audience who knows can not be all the basic principles of the novel, and who knows that the videogame (loosely). I love the various adaptations and proofreading fiction universe in different regions of the world or we want to pass them, and say that I have affection for this little comic advertising, which, if read knowing what to expect, is quality.
The design is sketchy but effective, the colors are beautiful, the story is still interesting (it introduces new creatures we meet again in the 3rd video games), but the staging is a monumental snapshot, you get a few giggles if you know a minimum of witcher universe.
Let's say it's a good version, but adapted to the American public, accustomed to certain comics conventions:
- When Geralt throws out signs, he takes the time to shout the name of each sign as if he threw a Poke Balls (a fight many witcher normally silent), and it also takes the time to tell his life and explains to what extent it is hefty by mastering this "trick That takes years of study and practice", all this in combat!
- The comic has the good will to bring a whole lot of details on Geralt (his job, his knowledge of monsters, the idea of maximum désenvoûtement he tries to practice, his relationship with women, its purpose, Bleak mania to call his horses, his vision of love, etc ...) but in a 70-page comic book, trying to fit all this is almost impossible, the story, the staging and dialogue do not have the time to ask, especially in a comic content bubbles must be short enough to keep a certain rhythm, and it does not correspond to this universe.
But overall, do not hesitate if you're a total novice or a great lover of the universe curious to see such adaptation. Some things are very good, started with the selection of the basic history, ending that matches the message of the novel or nothing is entirely white or entirely black. The choice of scenario that makes Geralt will team up with a hunter, and discussion of the similarity of their trade, and also a good thing.
By knowing what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised nonetheless. That's why I recommend this comic, I think for people less a fan than me of this universe, ca goes alone, and if one looks at the comic purely American perspective, it's pretty cool!
