I use the adapter to a Lenovo ThinkPad T420s, through its so-called combo jack I was initially a little surprised. This connector is built so that the stereo output also works through a standard three-pin plug - only for recording, you need a plug to the fourth pole. I should to say that the recording quality is excellent, in fact, not good: You hear a clear background noise. I'm assuming, however, that is on the computer itself, not on the adapter or on the headset, because when recording via the integrated microphone you can also hear in silence exactly the same sound. (For confirmation but a headset with combination plug or other recording devices with 3.5mm combo jack would fail me.)
PS: In electronics markets this type of adapter is apparently hard to get - if at all, a three-pin Y-adapter (stereo output once to twice a stereo output) are available, but of course that is something else. Amazon offers here (as so often) the solution ...
