Strange World

The Gormenghast Trilogy, Book 1: Titus Hell (Paperback)

Customer Review

Funny world than Mervyn Peake, it is both the baroque and the grotesque with Gothic overtones, so Gormenghast, this monumental labyrinthine castle where the author takes us on dusty maze. For Palace Gormenghast is a character in itself, probably the central figure. Everything is both immutable and vain, both its anarchic construction, all scholars and incomprehensible rituals are celebrated since time immemorial. For, Gormenghast, the ritual has replaced the power and also the reason. The Count, the Countess and those around them are as crazy as stupid beings locked in their inner dreams and in the palace. Their singular impulses are sometimes illuminated by a flash of reason but soon they capsize again in their imaginary world. One seems to be sensible in this chaos, this is the ex-baker Steerpike, which will put all his intelligence to LOEUVRE to gain power and become the element by which artificial palate léquilibre will probably seffondrer gradually.

A funny novel, jy liked the atmosphere and the particularly stunning style worked, ornamented with the author, the effect daccumulation. The weird world of Gormenghast can seduce but my left remote, probably because the characters themselves are too strange, too outraged to quon can feel empathy is so light it - with them. However, I continue the adventure with the second book in this trilogy to see if this world that Mr. Peake has so carefully set up for more than 400 pages will really move and come to life.
