The saga of the cursed kings begins with this volume entitled "The Iron King" in 1314. The author endeavors to revive the King of France Philip IV the Fair in his last year of life rich in emotions. 7 years of litigation, investigations, issues end with the execution at the stake the leaders of the Knights Templar, which threatened the political authority of the King of France. Maurice Druon takes the curse of Jacques de Molay when dying: "You will all be cursed until the thirteenth generation."

The end of the reign of Philip IV was not appeased. He learns from his daughter Isabella, Queen of England, sad wife married with his homosexual husband, her daughters-cocufient his son, weakening the monarchy. Defender of the interests of the Kingdom and its subjects, Philip IV must react firmly.

Writing this historical novel is alert. Maurice Druon shares his love of the history of France with his readers to the delight of the latter. The imagination of the novelist gives flesh and feelings to historical figures who struggle. Following Announces 100 Years War with England. "The Accursed Kings" are part of the well operated and also instructive vein exploited by Robert Merle in "Fortune de France".
