Bloodless travelogue ...

Viking 1 (Viking Trilogy) (Paperback)

Customer Review

You can tell Tim Severin clear that this trilogy is his first work in the field of historical fiction and he otherwise (certainly excellent) written travelogues.

The environment, certain procedures, rituals and political relations are very well described.

The characters but remain consistently pale. This is particularly bad for the hero of the story, Thorgils.

This "thor applies" in the truest sense of the word through the world history and is neither fish nor fowl. He is not a warrior and not a prophet, not a seer and no significant figure of contemporary society.

Actually, he is someone like you and me, except he about half a dozen dreams with regard to the future has (and in 3 books!).

His principal mark and an advocate of the old faith to be (the Norse gods), basically remains nothing more than a hollow phrase, which, though repeatedly embellished but repeated very rarely and then absolutely insignificant.

And the martial Cover of books arouse in the reader an expectation that is hardly ever met in the storylines.

So it does not create Severin Unfortunately, I get excited about Thorgils and I must confess that I have flown over a few pages very fast, on which nothing happens.

Although this is also depending on the subject area not required, but at a historical fiction with Vikings background and battle helmet on the cover I would not get bored on scroll pages.

Maybe I made the mistake earlier to read the Viking series of excellent Bernard Cornwell.

There you will find everything that you miss at Severin and his Viking trilogy:

The Last Kingdom (Alfred the Great 1)

For me, Viking gets 1 3 stars for the "historic" trip report, know the but to fully appreciate just enthusiasts of this era.

Excitement and variety can not be expected here.
