Two Worlds II - Game of the Year Edition (Video Game)

Customer Review

After so many positive reviews have already been written, I dare hardly to criticize. But I think that potential buyers should be confronted with the perception of players who have become less happy with the game.
Let me begin by saying that I have retained Two Worlds I as one of the best role-playing games of recent years in memory. I thought it was so good that I - after a nasty bug made sure that I got no further after 20 hours of play in the main quest - newly installed and started from scratch.

What bothers me but then the successor?

At least not story and quests - which are, as so often described by Vorrezensenten, varied, exciting, sometimes amusing and pressing ahead with the story. Even the elaborate crafting system, the open game world with its manifold possibilities (eg horse shows, gambling, countless side quests, purchase of real estate, etc.), some of outstanding elaborated NPCs varied upskill opportunities (but also the subsequent possibility to skillen again ), ample free teleportation options and the nature and ease of use of the combat system.
There are just the little things that annoy the long run and have a disruptive effect over time on the gaming experience.

1. Setting

Contrary to the reviews of other reviewers I found the game world more than big enough. On the other hand, the main island, with its savannah grass and the many shades of brown and sepia tones not just a treat for the eyes and makes the landscape look quite quickly monotonous. This is solved in other areas better with more vegetation. The all-roaming wolves, ostriches, leopards, rhinos (?) Etc. provide a lot of variety at the beginning of the action, but after they are always the same and stand around in a random arrangement and number everywhere, boredom is also reflected here sometime noticeable. The meat produced from such animals (later fur and spec. Special items) there is immediate minimum (healing) effects or to mix alchemic potions use, usually clog things but just the inventory (the inventory is divided into different Subareale , there is an inventory of weapons etc., but also for medicinal herbs, meat, animal horns etc., which can be processed further to soak).
The various enemy camp all look nearly identical and are populated by the same old enemies who belong to the classes melee, ranged and mage. I find the way, well, that the dead rise not again, and a cleaned bearing "clean" remains. To fight the same old enemies (in the same number) in the 100th enemy camp, degenerates and so eventually an ordeal (in Far Cry 2 bought the types even again, that was not unbearable).
The towns and larger settlements are made very carefully, there is nothing to complain about. Maybe that you can indeed break into almost every house, but - I'll get later - not worth generally.
In later missions is often not very clear how to get to places on the map (for example, if they are surrounded by high mountains). It remains unclear, for example, whether you have to wander around a mountain to find a hidden access if you can exceed the mountains in one place or if there is a teleport that takes you to the place. Maybe I'm too impatient and have nowadays too little time for such a thing, but I regret the "meaningless" with a game spent time, when I walk around stromere a mountain 2h walk to find a (possibly non-existent) hidden entrance. Here notes or clearer feedback from the game mechanics were (eg that you can not climb the mountains to 3/4 before it goes no further) desirable.

2. Activities
It is nice that you can do so many things, bad is the implementation of diversity.
Horse riding - incredibly stupid idea that you control by rhythmic pressing a button, the forward movement of the horse. One hammering too often, the Beast throws a starting, hammering is too infrequently (multi-tasking is not given to everyone) remains the Gaul stand (which may end up ugly depending on the situation). Rarely so what unintuitives seen.
Lockpicking - one already gets out the bow and gets eventually also heavy locks on. The challenge heavier locks makes for a while and a lot of fun. But it costs a lot of time and it literally insanely stand around thousands of sealed boxes. One can spend hours trying perceived, in a house (with 12 chests) to open each of these chests. The question that arises at some point: Why? Just is not like in a Diablo, where weapons or armor waiting with Super-attributes on a. It's always the same weapons and armor without any special skills. Even the rare objects with better attributes are ultimately totally boring. My motivation was to the 1000th crate anyway extremely after (for killed enemies, the same applies).
Stealing - is not explained in the tutorial or manual you need it at a late side quest, but then it is almost impossible to create. ME explained by not saying and is bucking hard. The best save before each planned theft.
Gambling - are two variants that you can play in larger settlements. My feeling is meaningless (no comparison to Mass Effect) and hard to win. Systematically to make money to, I did not in any case managed :-)
Climbing and jumping - you can and must climb houses (of conductors), balancing across chasms, jumping from roof to roof in many quests. In principle, nice idea. However, the control (+ lousy camera) the hero is so imprecise that it degenerates into practice for frustration tolerance in such moments.
Mix potions - Wow, what you can do. Experimenting with different ingredients joined together can be very funny short time. That's it then also. So many different effects and there is not usually the wagons have only effect on the strength potion. Yawn!

3. Graphics
In principle, practical and attractively (but really nothing special). But what totally walked me right from the start on his nerves, was not switched off blur effect. I do not know whether the addition should create atmosphere for me he has just blurring otherwise safe means quite appealing textures.
Dear developers: it really would have been too much to ask, to add a menu item to switch off this effect? I only thought I was perhaps the only one this optical "sophistication" goes back to the pointer, in many forums but also tell players about a Genervtsein of this graphical gimmick.
Also common are smaller clipping (eg in battles) and larger collision detection error. If one example-as risen in the wrong place the horse, it may be that you can not climb again (eg because it is suppressed at around an embankment). If you rely on the beast, might help only a store of old saved game.

4. camera
It's a lot of bitching about it were, I do not want it closer into here. But it was - as I recall - in the old Two Worlds solved better.

5. combat system
Actually quite well and intuitively made and just starting out quite demanding. Also because - unlike many other recent RPGs - there are simply areas with strong opponents, you really can only defeat at some level. If one has but his fighting skills developed, is mainly blocking the ultimate camphor Easier. You can block nearly 100% of the damage and in between handing out themselves. Battles are thereby easily.

Anyway, I've TW2 no longer played after about 50h Time. It simply lacked the incentive. Is to Morrowind and Oblivion only the third role playing game that I do not play to the end. All 3 were me someday too boring (at Oblivion's was the perceived 1000. Portal with the same old towers behind it). Maybe I'm not hardcore roleplayers enough, maybe I lack patience and time. If I invest today the evenings several weeks in a game, I want to be tied up and entertained. I had only recently with Bioware's Dragon Age. Here I have - incl. Extensions - easily invested 120 hours playing time and bored for a minute.
Role players who know the feeling of "too much freedom" and with Morrowind or Oblivion had their Dauermotiva-tion problems should consider purchasing. Also role players who have not "to waste" as much time as before and look for everything exciting entertainment because there are role-playing games like the Mass Effect series, The Witcher or Dragon Age certainly more appropriate.
For patient and frustration tolerant people to TW2 still may turn out to be hot tip. Who can live with the limitations described by me, gets a solid RPG with an exciting story and tons of quests.
