The Complete Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord (CD)

Customer Review

Many versions succeed and, fortunately, are not alike.

Rachel Podger, baroque violin, and Trevor Pinnock, harpsichord, get along like a house afire in this wonderful very well balanced etching; they are added the services of a gamba player, Jonathan Manson, to interpret sonatas 1023, 1021 and most controversial 1019a. This proved an excellent idea. The viola da gamba "do not hit" offers a delicate and added value to these sonatas finely interpreted.

Note that Rachel Podger addressed the sonata 1019a rather sheepishly unlike all the fury of a Goebel. The initial Vivace would have won to differentiate his double, the Sonata BWV 1019, but I do not hold that against the soloist so give this work the captive listener. It should be mentioned the remarkable sound recording, any clarity which raises this version on top of the discography for audiophiles.

The dreaded and so confusing the sonata allegro 1023 stretches for nearly a minute. Not yielding to no romantic delusion, Podger is fascinating virtuosity and authenticity to the solo violin. It delivers the most captivating Baroque properly service it is given me to hear.

All disk is exciting and holds some treasures; for example the "Violino solo accompagnao the e basso" of the 1019a and "Cantabile" of the Sonata BWV 1019a 6 Version 2. This version is remarkable in every way and totally eclipse the Manze release.
