Top machine with a very good price / performance ratio. Have additionally ordered me a mounting frame, because I do not need a DVD drive and bought a WD Scorpio Black 750 GB only a year ago. In addition, I had 8GB DDR3 RAM from my previous laptop, so I have now more RAM and an additional, fast data disk.
Links to retrofit parts or components mentioned are added as a comment.
Features:
Intel i5 4th Gen.
4GB DDR3 1600MHZ memory (Ramaxel RMT3170EB68F9W-1600)
NVIDIA GeForce GT755M
Samsung SSD 256 GB (SAMSUNG MZ7TD256HAFV-000L7)
matt FHD display
JBL speakers
As already mentioned, you get a top equipment at a fair price. Memory, I would replace it with 8 GB Kingston RAM. The i5 has a super power and the very high additional cost on a i7 hardly worth it for a normal user. Even for games ranging from the i5 completely, only with many multitasking tasks is the i7 interesting, so rather for graphic designers or programmers.
The GT755M is very potent, almost everything can be played on high or very high, here too the extra charge for a 2nd graphics card is inappropriate. A 2nd graphics card does not bring so much more power that would justify the price, as well as SLI is not supported by many games still and you have to contend with problems such as tearing and Treiberproblemchen. A GT755M thus do just fine, who wants more should anyway consider to purchase a state machine, because you always have to make compromises in terms of performance compared to the desktop equivalent to a laptop.
The SSD is from Samsung, but I can not clearly assign them as it is an OEM version of Lenovo. The product number is indicative of a normal 840, but it has for more than unusual 256GB memory. I suppose it is a cross between a normal 840 and 840 PRO. The speed is very good and also the service life of standard should Alan Neither sufficient, even if TLC modules are installed, eventually could be in 256 GB 10 GB per day write a term of approximately 7 years to achieve. I link more tests and a long-term test of a user in which they 3556 cycles (more than three times the notice for Samsung) by held and a total of 433 TB were written, which would correspond to a term of 60 years at 20 GB per day.
The speakers are also very good for a laptop, of course, lacks a bit of bass, but the sound can not be mistaken. The display is easy to control from very light to very dark, the colors are beautiful, it is very stable viewing angles and features a beautiful black level.
Processing:
The workmanship is good, only the plastic edge at the transition from the metal cover to the frame is a little spicy, but not nearly as bad as alleged in a review here. I can not imagine how to get to this edge when writing with the heel of your hand or -hinge me the best of intentions.
The touchpad is also good, nice solid tactile feedback and it is gives way in the corners MMN. logically if the buttons are integrated into the touchpad, as it should work otherwise also. The bad reviews I bring more to the ignorance how to properly configure the driver back and especially how to use a Multitouchpad. I do not need the two buttons to left-click or right-click run and never verrutsche therefore.
The settings can be changed in the Control Panel under Mouse / Geräteeinstellugen / settings. "Enable Tap" Anyway to make a left-click with a simple tip on the touch pad and disable "Edge Swypes". Under enable multi-finger the tab 2 finger "Click", "Vertical scrolling", "Horizontal scrolling", "Zoom" and "Rotate". Thus, you can scroll vertically and horizontally with two fingers, just change the zoom level, and rotate images. By clicking with 2 fingers on the touchpad to solve right-click and also does not slip by. If the right-click does not work so, I put a link ready to fix this bug in Windows.
Sure, there are here and there a few gaps between transitions, but at this price level, it is processed 1A. The only real complaint I have is the dark metal surface that attracts fingerprints almost magically, so always have a supply of eyeglass cleaning cloths at home.
Operating System:
I set up a dual-boot system, Windows 8 and Ubuntu are on the SSD, also the games. I have used in the Legacy BIOS mode, but you could install Ubuntu and Windows 8 in UEFI mode. One should make sure that Secure Boot is disabled and Windows 8 hybrid boat is disabled. Thus, a dual-boot system, nothing stands in the way.
At the start of the LiveCD of Ubuntu must be set to boot to the Live CD nomodeset and be able to install Ubuntu. This you do in the first screen when you boot the LiveCD (purple and below is a keyboard icon to see), there, press ENTER, then a menu appears in which you first select the language, with F6 you open the menu in order to activate nomodeset , Is Ubuntu installed and is it even started yet quick to install all updates (sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade) and then disable more nomodeset first. Simply open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T), sudo gedit / etc / default / grub type, then opens the editor, there in the lines
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT = "" or
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX = ""
nomodeset thus delete it looks like this:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT = "quiet splash"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX = ""
Save and close the editor. Still running then the command sudo update-grub, reboot, done. I only had problems with the installation of the proprietary NVIDIA driver, but I do not need the NVIDIA card under Linux, because I anyway games under Windows and look for films etc. The integrated Intel Graphics is more than enough. It also does all the function keys, the keyboard lighting etc .. Still quite nice, Ubuntu reaches a tip with two fingers to trigger a right click, thus the touch pad must never be pressed.
Conclusion:
Good product at a fair price, am absolutely satisfied so far, about the little problems I can overlook. In long-term use, it has yet to prove problems should arise there is an update. From me a strong buy recommendation, and Linux users.
PS: For a link to install the prop. Nvidia driver or a tip on how it worked with other Ubuntu users I would be grateful. For me, the installation ends with a black screen on your desktop, the login is loaded but normal, as I can for example. Open the terminal, but the window is missing around it.
