This disc, recorded in brucknbérienne land and on the go, which is rare in Boulez, is to my knowledge the only testimony of Bruckner French chef. Boulez chooses the Haas edition and it is not unbearable usual cuts in the adagio and the final. Boulez finds the right balance between an extreme respect for the score and sound splendor, not without a certain opulence, but is well suited to the spirit of this monumental score. The bell at the end of the first movement is particularly successful with this crescendo of trumpets developed as anywhere else. Note also the importance given to timbales throughout the symphony, until the terrible pounding of the coda. The impact produced by this record is huge and is now head of the discography, next to Eugen Jochum in 1949 (DG).
