Before you order the disk, you should be aware that the 2TB distributed on 2x1TB disks, ie, in RAID1 mode (Mirror) has only 1TB available. While standing on the packaging, from the descriptions on the Web that is not immediately obvious. Available are after commissioning 928GB.
The installation is very simple: cabling, software from CD, drive letters (WinXP) link, ready - everything properly.
When it comes to the additional features, but then the problems start. The plate has an iTunes server (for streaming) and a Twonky Media Server.
For iTunes Server: As I already knew in advance, he mastered only the basic functionality, ie, stream music - no cover, no video. In principle, a useless feature. Are on the computers in the household anyway own iTunes libraries, because you can only synchronize so on iPods. The server will not do. I also recalled to stream on my stereo and use an Apple Express Base Station for thought and my iPod touch using "remote" app to use for remote control. The latter is likely to not work already, so the matter is uninteresting.
Twonky Media Server: This would be very useful, it would work well. Unfortunately, there are some bugs (version 4.4.9), and an update is not easy. Although there are newer versions, the firmware can only be updated via a provided by WD firmware image. I hope there comes an update. Among the problems: There are problems with self-made Audiobooks (.m4b) or MP4 videos. When connecting directly to the XBOX360 most files can be played. The XBOX360 has problems regardless of the source (eg from USB stick) when playing DRM-free, purchased songs (iTunes Plus). There should indeed be an Xbox update, so far I have not found. Impeccable run mp3 and m4a files created. The configuration of the Twonky Server is easy, the problems come from both the XBOX and the Twonky server.
MioNet (allows access to the data from the Web) Short tasted, then turned off again. Although I had no real problems, but it is not really comfortable. After I did my data go on a small portable USB drive, I do not need the (slow) feature.
But there are also a few positive aspects. The supplied backup program "WD Anywhere Backup" is very simple and runs discreetly in the background. Sometimes I would like to see a few more features, but is also OK. It is advantageous to store multiple file versions or even Outlook files, improved the management of Inclusion / Exclusion list. Installed on 2 computers, it causes error reports that you can send it to Microsoft (you can disable luckily).
The design is very nice, as is the processing. Operating noise will be noticeable, but not annoying. Electricity consumption, I have not measured, but should be relatively low according to the manufacturer. Performance is ok for me, in my case after the router / wireless network is the bottleneck.
Summary:
Installation: 5 stars
Design / feel: 5 stars
Backup: 4 stars
iTunes / Twonky Server: 2 Stars
Operating noise: 4 stars
MioNet: 3 stars (slowly, not intuitive; some tested)
Other: 5 stars (User management and expansion with additional USB disk available but not tested)
Price / Performance: 4 stars
After I use disk mainly for backup / storage, I would buy them despite the problems with the additional features back.
