A particularly practical alternative is the stick when using multiple SIMs (for example to be able to the best network or the best deal depending on the situation) and their own notebook even already has integrated UMTS, it is but for each SIM change Extra must shut down because the SIM slot unfortunately often inconveniently located under the battery, which must always be taken until then, or because the UMTS modem in the laptop is older and therefore slower. After the stick has to be mugged for a SIM change, open the lid (is very easy), swap the SIM and insert the stick again.
Suggestions for improvement:
- The key installed mbbservice.exe the service. This causes unfortunately permanently CPU load, even if the drive is not plugged in (Edit: At least for me only under Windows Vista 32 bit, but not under Windows 7 64 bit - maybe that is also the fact that my second computer with Windows 7 is considerably faster than with Vista and the idling operation of the services therefore hardly falls into the weight). For me it was about 10-12% utilization in idle (without the service only 1-3%), which meant that the notebook fan permanently ran after a long time. Principle of service, it seems to be noticing the plugging of the stick and then automatically start the default browser with the configuration page.
Remedy: Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services -> Mobile Broadband HL Service -> Right click -> properties -> Change Startup type to Manual or Disabled, service status, click Stop. Result: The browser no longer opens automatically after you connect the drives, but you can him to recognition of the stick (to wait two system sounds: the first just after plugging in, the second a few seconds later) as well open itself, the Configuration page [...] * call and then bookmark it. This eliminates the unnecessary CPU usage with appropriate fan noise again.
* Addendum: Unfortunately, Amazon has a link to the configuration page of the sticks away ([...]), although this is not is an external link, but only to the internal address of the sticks in the browser (which only works if plugged Stick ). The IP address of the sticks is: 192.168.1.1 (and I hope not Amazon cuts these out). You can then attach "/html/index.html".
- I think it is not good that the stick automatically by default after plugging up the connection. Because if you do not have SIM with monthly flat rate, so for example, begun the same one day flat, although perhaps initially just wanted to check how the radio coverage at the current location is (showing the stick in the browser before connecting to) and whether a connection therefore at all worth (or if you prefer, if necessary should try the SIM of another network) or wanted to send only one SMS (also goes via the configuration page without first establish an online connection). Therefore, I have this function deactivated (leaves in the settings), so that a connection is only established when you click on the appropriate button.
