Customer Review

Trollope is far from having the reputation that fits in France ... This is a very long novel, printed in a font unpleasant for over 50 years because it is too small ...

Fortunately, all is captivating and has even significantly shortened some of my nights ...

The main characters, men and women, are powerful and live before us "in all reality," which is already a feat that can not even approach the most current novelists: some are overwhelming: the international financial, mistress American, the weak are more endearing, perhaps: the former lover of the US, last son bum, the nobliaux penniless. But everything is done with finesse, in reality, the portraits are constantly qualify and transform gradually as we advance in the reading ...

The dialogues are conducted with great skill and breathe the natural, which is the height of art ... Overall, it's fine, intelligent, often quite funny; Tree female characters are successful and different social backgrounds.

Some sensitive issues, finally, are discussed with frankness and honesty amazing for its time: for example, the question of the integration of Jews into society "as it should" and gaze of the ruling layer on them .. . No French novel of the same period dare not, to my knowledge, to confront this theme ...

I will now hasten to order the BBC adaptation of the novel, but only available on DVD sub-titratable in English!
