Making Music (Audio CD)

Customer Review

After the bankruptcy of Sussex Records 1975 Columbia was probably more than willing to take on the most successful artist of the small labels. That Columbia Withers again wanted to build to the Star, to whom he was with, Still Bill` (1973) ascended and whose career with, + Justments` (1974) had suffered a small slump, is apparent in the session musicians on this plate participated. Ray Parker Jr, Wah Wah Watson, Dave Grusin, Harvey Mason, Ralph MacDonald and Ernie Watts were at that time already the crème de la crème of the US studio musician.

What this plate is noted in some tracks already but that Withers beautiful moved slowly away from urgent Soul songs towards pleasing cuddly tracks. That may be because on the one hand, that it is no longer the factory workers was the way wrote songs that moved him, but a star who was highly respected in the industry for his talent. On the other hand that was probably also at Columbia, who wanted to make him hold still mass-compatible.

, Making Music` but is largely still a great album. Those Kommerz' tracks like, I Wish You Well`, The Best You Can` and the delicate ballad Hello Like Before` work because the songwriting here is very good (just the best of these songs, Family Table` was incomprehensibly eye couples rather than single).

, Blemishes Love To Your Mind` is then in the tradition of previous Withers Groove songs like, Kissing My Love` or, Who Is He ... `and fascinated with a hypnotic groove of here but not from the underlying beat but results from the rhythm of the melody.

That he could always still be very funky, he proved with the reminiscent of Sly Stone, Sometimes A Song`. But there was already a composer as failures, I Love You Dawn` or, Paint Your Little Picture` recorded that already sound a bit formulaic. Toll but that dramatically stiegernde,, She's Lonely`.

The main reason why this album was as successful as it Columbia would probably desired for the elaborate production, was that as a real Reisser as, Lean On Me 'or, Is not No Sunshine` missing. Withers even wanted to after - retire already from the music business failure of this disk, but was of the Crusaders persuaded to go on - by his standards.

, Naked & Warm` (ebenfallls 2010 for the first time released on CD) was then compositionally still weaker and even erfogloser, but a track in a class with had, If I Did not Mean You Well` back on it and Withers was thus the Fun at the music again. And with this subsequent album, Menagerie` he was due, Lovely Day` anyway back to stardom.

Nevertheless, Making Music` a very good Withers album that just - is unjustly forgotten - precisely because of the great lack of sellers. This CD edition of this disc of 2010, although with his, the original LP cover replicating thick cardboard sleeve, beautifully done, however, is the sound a little flat. More fun probably the original LP, the rare, but if, then get cheaper.
