Since 1985, meetings are regularly held between the Dalai Lama and Western scientists. Each meeting focuses on a specific theme, chosen because it allows to connect the Buddhist tradition and research in neuroscience, biology and contemporary physics. Most of these meetings have been the subject of a report published in English. Many of these account reports have been translated into French. This is the latest released, and one of the most interesting. Each of these books is a marvel that allows at the same time to get acquainted with contemporary research on exciting topics (lucid dreams, the relationship between emotions and healing / disease, near death experiences (NDE) etc.) and discover the wealth of the Buddhist tradition, much more extensive in these areas that probably any other religious tradition. This volume is devoted to "Destructive Emotions", their influence on health and behavior, and ways to overcome them. It also contains amazing information about the first extensive studies (with brain imaging) of Lamas in meditation, the results very surprising, allow to argue for the positive influence of meditation on mental and physical health. Only problem (which will appeal to some): unlike "Gateways" and "When the mind with the body dialogue", that report was written in prose, instead of just being a verbatim exchanges and presentations; it makes it a little more readable and more "bestsellerisable" for the general public, but it can sometimes become annoying. I also appreciate the medium single reference to September 11 to illustrate the terrible destructive potential of negative emotions. It would have been my truest sense, even to illustrate the destructive potential of negative emotions, to also mention the many Tibetan victims of Chinese oppression. But we forgive easily to Daniel Goleman this American-centrism: this book is recommended not only to all those interested in the link between Buddhism and neuroscience, but given its easily accessible nature and the amount of information that it contains, it is also recommended to all those who are curious to know what contemporary research can bring to their understanding of their daily lives. After all, what most interests all participants in this meeting is simply to find the most direct way to lead a happy life by getting rid of "detructrices emotions." A whole program, but we can only rejoice that finally neuroscientists interested in it ...
