The added value compared to the 800 series (which I had for years in use) is huge in my view: At last a display resolution, with the usual very good readability even in direct sunlight. Operation and display quality are increased again, with the segments is added value has been generated, which can not be overestimated ("mobile Strava"), the routing is so much better than the 800s. The only argument against the 1000 can really only come from the purists: Who pays attention to every gram and want to pinch little electronics on his bike, which is well served even better with the (old) 500-er. Those who wish to have maps and routing, should skip the 800-series he mainly due to lack of display quality and the fast 1000 he prefer definitely.
Because I wanted to have the Edge 1000 very early, the purchase of the device has not Amazon occurred (at the time could not provide).

Supplement dated 9 September 2014:
After several thousand kilometers with the Edge in 1000, I would like compared to my review of July attach supplements:
Negatives: The routing is not as good as hoped. This is currently not the best side of the device, one might say. Only minor improvements (if any) compared to its predecessor. Problem? Partly nonsensical route suggestions, barely comprehensible, when recalculating the algorithm is stuck to the former intermediate points and verrennt more and more in the old calculations. For me, the reference here clearly the device of Falk, the (OSM) are on the same map material capable of completely different services. An important difference, which can be crucial for tourers. Here is the first, very positive impression was probably influenced by random results, which were then still superimposed in the long-term observation of many less good calculations.
Positive 1: The reception quality of the Edge 1000 is a stunner, especially noticeable in the speed of fitting after power, more than 1-2 seconds hardly pass before the satellites are found (supported by appropriate tables loaded from the device in advance and are constantly updated). Even with changes of location of a few hundred kilometers hardly deteriorated "Pounce", as with other equipment common. On this point much (!) Faster than the Garmin 800 (for 810 I can not say this).
Positive 2: The Remote Control. At first I was skeptical, just another gimmick? Then in action: On Rennlenker I had no favorable handle position found, but at Flatbar of mountain bikes. Take switching between screens with no hands from the handlebars, map, elevation profile easily switched through. Class of side effect: The lighting can be activated, making the routing is extremely simplified in dark, narrow singletrack remotely. Great idea, especially in the area a nice support (presumably for time trialists and triathletes who want the screen operation probably use more reluctant because of special handlebar positions / can).
Positive 3: Perfect software stability and quality (from 2.40 currently 2:50): Do not crash, no malfunction, no freezing of the display, no data loss, not one second. Reliable binding of ANT-sensors (incl. Performance measurement systems of other manufacturers). Absolutely simple and intuitive user interface ensures: Note Start recording when motion is detected, after stopping to save the workout etc .: Perfect processes, in which one can not make any mistakes (except on purpose ;-)). The Garmin has' something to imitate (yet all other devices I tested had diesbzgl. Vulnerabilities).
Neither positive nor negative:
WLAN and Bluetooth: Nice, but not for me Plus - because I save my data not only in Garmin Connect, do I have to download it to the device to your Mac. Because the Edge yes must be loaded after each trip also arises for me no benefit.
Wishes for the future: We see the Garmin devices the orientation of military hardware to: Everything's kind of gross and Globig advised (beautifully visible on completely oversized fitness bracelet vivofit). So also with the Edge: reduces the power of Edge on the dimensions of the screen (ie the edge is minimized), and (small ANT transmitter-tag) reduces the remote control to the size of a modern, miniaturized switch nor revised the routing algorithm, and the product would get 5 stars from me. Even so, for me still the best, currently available receiver, but it is with room for improvement. I stay at the 4 stars.
