The Malazan Book of the Glorious Dead, Volume 1: The gardens of the moon (Paperback)

Customer Review

Be warned, this first volume of the Malazan Book of the Glorious Dead is great. Written by Steven Erikson many years before the rest of its cycle, it has a number of defects which may be prohibitive for many readers. This novel was conceived by its author as a "postmodern fantasy" striving to break all the codes of the genre, but with this first test, Erikson's probably gone too far in his business. Intrigue very dense and complex, very many characters and not always easy to differentiate and, by extension, to enjoy, incessant deliberately cryptic passages using foreshadowing techniques (that is to say, referring to elements of the unknown intrigue the reader), everything is done so that the reader finds himself lost, adrift in a world of which he knows neither the proponents nor outs. By knowing what awaits you as you prepare to not understand much in the first 200 pages and have no answers to many questions at the end of volume, you should still be able to experience a lot of fun reading Gardens of the Moon.

Diving in the Malazan universe is doubling the blow. The Gardens of the Moon introduces an original fantasy world, the magic system difficult to understand at first but terribly well thought (the famous "labyrinth" or "warrens" VO), the more inspired by Greek and Roman Antiquity as a medieval world, a world full of gods, heroes, wizards, soldiers, mercenaries, assassins, a dark world conspiracy and betrayal are the watchwords. Who wanted the death malazéens mages and Bridges burners during the siege of the city of Pale? Who Throne-Ghost and Cotillon, and why do they want at this point to the Empress? Why is the city of Darujhistan as important strategically? Paran What role will he play for Oponn god? My Regrets she manage to assassinate his target? Who are the terrible T'lan Imass? In short, many of intrigues interweave in this book and involve sometimes overpowered characters like Anomander Rake, Lord of Lunerre a Andii Tiste living for centuries and holds a colossal power. A dense book, so poignant, intriguing, in which he should not hesitate to get lost sometimes and come back a few pages back to reread certain passages or details.

This especially since it introduced, and I weigh my words, the largest cycle Fantasy ever written. The Malazan Book of the Glorious Dead, strong 10 tomes only the first two of which have been translated into French, unfortunately, reveals a fabulous story, epic, rich background of abysmal spanning hundreds of thousands of years, involving peoples, civilizations, races, heroes and gods all excavated more than each other. La Chaine des Chiens, the See of Capustan, decision Coral, Karsa Orlong Odyssey, the war between Tiste Edur and Letherii, the second Y'gathan taken by the troops of the Empire, so on and best, all these events lectures, driven by strong and touching characters, far from Manichaeism, make us live a great, great time Fantasy. A cult saga and essential reading for any fan of the genre.
