This is a detective story relatively easy and pleasant to read that I recommend as holiday reading ... especially if you plan to become familiar with Chinese culture. Some reservations, however: - The action takes place in the 90s: the descriptions are offset with the current situation; - The dark tale somewhat in caricature or didactic purpose: the author seems to be aimed at soon as he can give us a lesson in cultural differences, the consequences of the Cultural Revolution. Playback sometimes becomes tedious if you already know a little Chinese culture; conversely, it is perhaps a more accessible book for a first reading "Chinese". As for the quality of the detective story, it is more in an outstanding action in a psychological intrigue or detective mystery novel. The characters are endearing.
