Customer Review

On his homepage Reinhard Mey asks for understanding that he waived in view of his family situation (his son Max is since last year in a vegetative state) in this album on media coverage, and of course he is right with his indication that guards his songs listeners anyway self-explanatory. He also writes: "... the writing, the music and the strict structure of work have given me support." Well dive Reinhard Mey portrait on many of his albums, but his expression on the cover of "Mairegen" says it all.

At the same time makes the album shows that Mey does not want to be overwhelmed by sadness and worry, as the last sentence of the album in "What no one dares" (a set to music by Konstantin Wecker text of Lothar Zenetti) expresses: "Where everything is dark , makes light. " It was expected that the album would not turn out funny; "May rain" is characterized by a pleasant meditative peace and quiet, but without being depressed, it is noisy at any point and is therefore not only one of the Mey-albums with the most depth, but also the most economical, most homogeneous arrangements in his career for a long time, at least since "colors" (1990) (and so once again increases the contrast for me little esteemed predecessor "Bunter Hund").

The percentage of songs that deal with memories is higher than usual ("The first time", "good soul", "May rain", "Rotten Radish Skiffle Guys" (a throwback to the band of his youth), "Spring on the bare stone "," The bread and butter "), in their sounds to the supporting role which she later this year, he wrote to the songs, had for him.

Reinhard Mey seems - to be closer to himself - inevitably: the only love song to his wife, "We are one", stirred despite or because of his lack of sentimentality. With "Antje" finds himself a loving portrait of a "normal" woman, the more convincing than about the thematically similar theme song "Rum Hart" in 2002.

"Against the Wind", "good soul" and "What no one dares" are appeals to live his individuality, not to lose heart and to go against the tide or in other words: "You can only fly against the wind."

In "Larissa's dream" castigates Mey in silent, but all the words which make the German "Idol" -bread and gaming (un) culture, less the mentality of the candidates as much more of the "three judges" and last but not least the goggling mass that makes these shows in the first place and funded possible. I find it incredible that force which analog expressiveness on the State of the Union in the double meaning of the chorus line "... Germany dismisses from (!) (...) Germany wants to play, Germany is doing nothing" is.

As might be expected, Reinhard Mey, a song wrote to his son: With the title "dragon's blood" I associate the desperate desire his son Max - or he himself - may be as inviolable as Siegfried in the Nibelungen saga, whose Bad in Dragon's blood made him almost invincible (except for a large leaf spot). A deep inner conflict is expressed when he sings on the one hand of the "determination to back zulieben you into the world" to the other hand to end the chorus with the line "my distant, my beloved child sleep, a". I read the lyrics of a friend and had alone while struggling with tears, rarely a song I was so touched as this. All the more so when I heard just today old songs like "Little Mate" or "You are a giant, Max", the Mey wrote about his sons, when they were toddlers. "Dragon's Blood" is for me the silent tracks on the album.

In autumn 2011, Reinhard Mey will go with these songs on tour; as wrote a Mitrezensentin, it is difficult to imagine, if and how "dragon's blood" may be among them.
