Snow White & The Huntsman (Audio CD)

Customer Review

On 20 October this year in a gala concert tribute to the Ghent "World Soundtrack Awards" the work of the busy and often critically acclaimed, while also criticized composer James Newton Howard. His film music is difficult to integrate into a genre. From the soundtrack of biographical films, such as the person of Charlie Wilson, through its legendary music for dramas such as "Snow Falling on Cedars", or its common employment for films of M. Night Shyamalan to huge blockbusters like "The Dark Knight "member of the regular moviegoers and film friend repeatedly Howard'sche sounds.

His latest contribution to film music event is in addition to the "tributes of Panem" and "Bourne Legacy" score for the darkly epic Schneewitchen interpretation "Snow White & The Huntsman" represents.
One can certainly argue about the quality of the film. This is not to be content of this article, this is about the music. And showing James Newton Howard in its purest form.

All JNH-typical elements are present:
The main theme (presented in detail here equal to the 1st track "Snow White") goes into the ear, under guarantee, that there can not get out so quickly. His presentation and processing is also typical: solo instruments (here horn and oboe) initiate the topic, which then undergoes its climax in a reply through the entire violin ensemble.

The use of additional synthetic and partly abstract sounds (z. B. Tracks 2, "I'll take your throne," and 11, "White Hart" 2nd half) is not an uncommon practice in Hollywood and is more of JNH well Understood. In this film music, and in other works Howards (eg "I am Legend"), the electronics do not mind, it complements the rest of the music and gives it again a new facet.

The same can be said about Howard's music for Action passages (eg, Track 5, "Escape from the Tower") say. The music fits perfectly into the picture and provides a skilful action music for themselves. In what is mentioned track also still seem to be the "Main Titles" from "Signs sign" and residual traces of "The Dark Knight" to look around the corner ...

Track 12, "Gone" is able to produce goose bumps and shows Howard's sense of the mystical in this original fairy tale story.

Only the selection of the presented tracks shows that this is an absolutely authentic Score James Newton Howard's music in "Snow White & The Huntsman".

This fact causes but also to a star deduction, I give: the music is almost too stereotypical. At first hearing, without reference to the movie pictures, I could well imagine this as a continuation soundtrack music to "I am Legend". That's not bad in the first place, here it bothers me, however, a little bit. James Newton Howard has a unique style that makes it unmistakable, both in terms of themed composition, their processing and machining, as well as orchestration, etc .... The music for "Snow White", he remains his style in my opinion, a trace to loyal, he dares nothing new for the film, which would have been quite expected since JNH has not yet written music for such a type (action fantasy) film. I currently have with the music Hans Zimmer & John Powell Similar problems: Great style that always has stunning effects on me, but lately missed a little innovation (Admittedly, this may also be because, that both last-mentioned composers currently mainly have to do with sequels ...)

The song "Breath of Life", performed by Florence & The Machine, is in itself is a powerful, rousing song in Gesdantgefüge the soundtrack he then appears nevertheless superfluous.

Nevertheless, it is in "Snow White" natural high quality movie music by James Newton Howard, why then, after all, the second highest score, 4 stars are of me.
